Historic Ipswich

In the late 19th Century, hooked rugs gained immense popularity, partly due to a Maine Peddler and rug hooker named Edward Sands Frost, who introduced preprinted hooked-rug patterns on burlap. In 1876, when Frost sold his business, he had about 180 patterns. Frost’s patterns included a wide variety of natural objects along with geometric patterns.  As commercial rug designs supplanted traditional hooked rugs,  traditional hand rug hooked rugs became valuable antiques, and were the most popular item in Ipswich antiques dealer Ralph Warren Burnham’s shop in Ipswich.

Burnham was a  collector, dealer, designer and repairer of hooked rugs, and an excellent if eccentric self-promoter. He employed  artists to repair and restore antique rugs, as well as to duplicate the older examples. Garden Cleanup

So far since coming home from our recent trip to the East Coast I have buried 4 wee mice and 1 large mouse (hope it wasn’t a rat).  Our cat Katerina likes to leave her delicacies on the mat outside our bedroom window.  img_1573


Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair

img_1624   Here are my purchases from the Seattle Book Fair back in early October.  Busy times – I have just unpacked the bag containing my purchases.  I loved the Fair – and would have liked to repeat the experience in Boston this past weekend when we were on the East Coast.  Can’t have too much of a good thing – but maybe not enough money or room in my suitcase!  There are so many books out there I want to read and/or collect.
