Art Work May 3, 2010

Over the years I have dabbled in trying to be an artist.  My early efforts were the paint by numbers kits that were so popular when I was growing up – and I still see them in the art and hobby shops today, 60+ years on.  I even painted a picture on a wastebasket – it was quite attractive – at least to me.

Spurred on by my very enjoyable Art Group which meets once a week at Kenilworth Bowling Club, I have been doing some painting, with acrylics this time.

my photo that was the starting point

this is the painting I started last Friday.  Poppies used to be in the Dundrum Town Centre.   When what was the big hole in the ground was filled in to make an ice rink, access was needed along the route in front of Poppies – Poppies disappeared and hasn’t returned.  It was a nice spot for a cup of coffee and I do like the building very much.  Fortunately the building is still there.

I think there will be a Poppies 3 – I rather like trying different colours and seeing what happens

this is an aide memoire to try to learn the basic chords for guitar – rather pale, treating the acrylics almost like watercolours with a pale wash

Last night there were two very interesting programmes on TV.  One about Andy Warhol and the other about David Hockney.   Here are photos from the internet.

The art work has taken over from the lawn bowling this holiday weekend.  Besides it’s still a bit cool to be out on the green for 3 or 4 hours.  BUT, I wrote a letter to the Irish Times about lawn bowling, The Sport for All Ages and it was published in today’s paper.

Florence Joelle Poster for Florence Joelle, found on the Shoreditch Sisters Women’s Institute blog.  I found this blog by reading Lesley’s blog about raising sheep and goats.  Only that particular blog entry was about the age profile of the Association of Guilds of Weavers Spinners and Dyers, compared with organisations which are more attractive to up-and-coming younger designers and craftspeople.

Anyhow, to fit in with my guitar lessons, I used this picture as my model for sketching today in my sketching group.  Here are my efforts, in sequence:

Looking for a Guitar September 4, 2009

View of Sugarloaf from Ballyman Road  View of Sugarloaf from the Ballyman Road, near Enniskerry in County Wicklow, Ireland

As we shift from summer to autumn my thoughts turn to new activities.   Last Saturday I picked up the brochure for the Adult Education Courses in Kilternan just near the Kilternan Market.  I saw that guitar lessons for beginners were going to be offered one evening a week.  Ho ho, I thought, just the thing for me. For quite a while now I’ve been interested in learning to play the guitar and here is my chance.  In roaming the 2nd hand book shops I have picked up several books on the subject but have yet to get serious about it – namely to buy a guitar and start to strum.  My serious research started a few days ago with a drive to a music shop in Bray.  I really love that drive on the back roads – I stopped the car to take a picture of the spectacular view of Sugarloaf – a familiar sight in County Wicklow.  I also stumbled upon these accounts by various climbers of the popular mountain.

I also stopped in Enniskerry to take a few pictures on this sunny afternoon.

As to my visit to the music shop – it was fruitful but not to the point of actual purchase.  I will look around a bit more.  The lessons don’t start for a couple of weeks so I have time to ponder.

And as to the drive itself – here’s an earlier entry I made titled Knitting Memories – I wrote that on a Spring day a couple of years ago.
