First Day Of School September 19, 2015

At last, the first day of school in Seattle, Thursday September 17 2015.  The Seattle teachers strike was “settled”.  In the end, the strike delayed the opening of the schools by only a week.  But what a disruptive week for almost everyone in the community.  Anticipation deferred.  Rearrangements galore.  Etc.  But when the first day became a reality,it proved to be a very heart warming and exciting day.

Rain=Green September 10, 2010

Filed under: Family,School,Seasons,Seattle — Janet @ 1:55 am

This morning, Wednesday Sept. 8, we woke up to rain – a soft rain – like we used to get in Ireland but doesn’t seem to happen any more.  A rain where you are quite happy to use an umbrella – i.e. no wind – but the umbrella is hardly necessary if you have a good rainjacket or vice versa.  It was the first day of school.  A very exciting day.  And we 8 McKee’s trudged up to Whittier.  Parents and grandparents and children converged upon the school from all directions.  There was a great buzz about the place.  It was like old home week.

But the reason I titled this post Rain=Green is that in the soft rain this morning I thought how good the moisture was for the garden and how spectacular the growth is in this corner of the Pacific Northwest.   Just take a look at the towering trees right in our own neighbourhood – and particularly in Salmon Bay Park nearby.  The fruit trees are overloaded at this time of year – apples, pears, plums in many gardens.  Blackberries are peeping out through some of the fences.  Tomatoes are ripening.  Gourds and pumpkins are growing bigger.  It is very colourful, and not just green.

  how’s this for a big tree.  It’s not a towering one in Salmon Bay Park (I can’t find my pictures of those trees) so this photo will have to do for now
